Rock Steady 33rd Anniversary Celebration Beginning July 31

The Rock Steady Crew has had one of the largest and most wide-reaching influences throughout all of Hip Hop for over 30 years now. From its humble beginnings in the Bronx in 1979 to the mass movement it has become currently, with branches all across the world, Rock Steady rivals other Hip Hop institutions like the Zulu Nation in what it has done, and is still doing, for the culture to this very day.

Now, with the 33rd anniversary right around the corner, the legendary collective of b-boys and breakers will be celebrating with a two-day outdoor music event for all ages. The event will begin on July 31 at 3 p.m. with both crew and solo break dancing battles, featuring DJ sets from DJ Skeme Richards, DJ DV ONE, DJ Ervin Arana and DJ Renegade from the UK. The winning crew will be flown to London to compete in the Sony Ericcson UK B-Boy Championships World Finals. Following the battles will be a presentation to the recipient of the Spy Award, and the “For the Funk of It” party hosted by Rock Steady alumni Crazy Legs and D-Story. Tickets for the first day event are $25 and can be purchased through CrazyLegsWorkshop.com.

The event will culminate on August 1 with “Rock Steady For Life”, a completely free, all-day outdoor concert and food drive, which will be held on Sunday, August 1 in association with the 5th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival in Newark, NJ. A host of acts are scheduled to appear, many of which have appeared at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival in the last few years.

Performers will include Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, Black Sheep, Lords of the Underground, Immortal Technique, 9th Wonder, Mickey Factz, Homeboy Sandman, Bishop Lamont, Brown Bag All Stars, Rakaa of Dilated Peoples and many more, with DJ sets by Evil Dee of Boot Camp Click and Duck Down Records fame, as well as DJ Eclipse, DJ Scratch and DJ JS-1.  The event will also feature a fashion show for the 2011 collection for Redbuttafly.
