[Video] World Beatbox Association, The 2011 American Beatbox Championships This Weekend In NYC 8/13-8/14

I can’t front, The American Beatbox Championships is officially my second favorite NYC festival. It’s absolutely extraordinary to witness these human beat machines kick pitch perfect covers of classic joints from across the musical divide. It’s absolutely unbelievable to witness these human beat machines literally beatbox AND rap simultaneously. The vocal chord is an extraordinary instrument and these talented individuals have mastered the craft. Checking it out this weekend is a moral imperative. Fact.

About The Event [Press Release]: It has become clear that Hip Hop’s latest sub-culture to slam into the mainstream, beatboxing is nothing less than vocal wizardry and at present an international phenomenon. The 2011 American Beatbox Championships returns by presenting two nights of jaw dropping entertainment that is sure to “be a Hip Hop lover’s dream.” (BRM).

In addition to the already stellar lineup of artists signed on for the Grand Final @ (Le) Poisson Rouge on Sunday August 14th in NYC which includes Chesney Snow & Stone Forest Ensemble, KRNFX, Colin Dean’s Roots & Grooves, Swiss Chris, DJ Boo, DJ Johnny Juice of Public Enemy, (hosted by) Eternia & Hasan Salaam and headlined by the Post Championship Concert featuring “The Human Orchestra” Kenny Muhammad, Decon Records Artist Rakaa from Dilated Peoples, & The Undisputed “ Godfather of Noise” Rahzel; the WBA has now added an additional day of programming as a kickoff event in Brooklyn on Saturday August 13th @ Nova Bar Garden & Lounge. www.novabrooklyn.com

The opening afternoon ignites the championships with outstanding features and an international open mic series hosted by D-Cross & headlined by Toronto’s own KRNFX the mind-blowing Canadian and Korean beatboxing champion alongside the irreverent and whimsical Alyson Greenfield singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and founder of the Tinderbox Music Festival. Musical globe trotter, Akil Dasan who is often referred to, as the Godfather of Beatbox Guitar will also headline the evening with the ReadNex Poetry Squad rounding out the bill. Certain to be extraordinary as beatboxers from all over the country converge on Brooklyn to continue to breathe new life into the American scene of the artform. The afternoon into evening also features a panel discussion with ASCAP Rhthym & Soul award-winner Aubrey Ayala, Akil Dasan, Chesney Snow, and Alyson Greenfield moderated by Kalae AllDay and “Graphic Vocals” a visual art exhibition featuring New York based artists Crystal Clarity and Joshua Benson. The kickoff event will be co-presented by FlavorPill and Witches Brew Cocktails.

The published advance ticket rate of $25 for the main event @ LPR on 8.14 will only be available until July 31st, 2011 at which point the tickets will go up to $35, so take advantage of the discount rate while supplies last.
